Victor Effion Johannes Onie-Williams was a star whose light shone brightly in every room he entered. At just 30 years old, he had already touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. A young man of immense promise, his journey was one of constant reinvention and growth. What began as a pursuit of academic and professional ambition transformed into a tale of self-discovery and triumph as he carved out his place in the world.

Onie was a name that resonated with brilliance in Sierra Leone’s fashion and entertainment industries. His striking looks and impeccable fashion sense secured him brand deals and a place in the country’s entertainment elite. Yet, what truly set him apart was his warmth, his kindness, and his unparalleled ability to make everyone feel seen and heard. He embodied a gentle spirit, always approachable, always loving, and forever selfless in his actions. His infectious energy brightened every space he entered.

Beyond his success in the public eye, Onie was a man of immense personal charm and resilience. He graced the stage of the Housemates reality show, where his true character radiated, and earned a place among the top three in Mister Africa International. Despite facing his share of challenges and hardships, he never allowed them to define him. Every obstacle became a stepping stone as he moved forward with unyielding grace and perseverance. Onie dared to dream and, more importantly, dared to turn those dreams into reality.

Though he was an only child, he had countless siblings in spirit—friends who became family. To his parents, he was their jewel, their pride, and their greatest treasure. Even as he chased his childhood dream of becoming a lawyer, he inspired those around him with his dedication and ambition. He was a true example of someone who embraced life fully, unafraid to pursue every opportunity with passion and determination.

Onie’s impact was not limited to his achievements. He was a friend, a confidant, and a source of endless joy to those closest to him. I first met Onie at my office during a casual gathering. Though we didn’t speak much that day, he soon became a regular presence in my life. On 3rd June, he sent me a message that sparked a beautiful friendship. From that point, we talked almost daily, sharing moments of laughter, support, and camaraderie.

He was the kind of friend who went out of his way to show he cared. Whether it was bringing me lunch, sharing memes to brighten my day, or spending hours on the phone discussing life, Onie had a way of making everyone feel special. He would take me shopping for materials and then to the tailor, patiently indulging my whims. Though he hated when I asked him to “snap me” for photos and though I scrutinised every shot, he always obliged.

Onie had a unique ability to be both a sounding board and a therapist without judgement. We’d spend hours talking, losing track of time, sharing thoughts and dreams. I remember the day he told me he was pursuing an LLB. I was so proud of him, though now that memory brings deep pain. He spoke of his close bond with his mum and the joy of always being well-fed from home.

I will miss his late-night calls, often frustrated with assignments but always determined to succeed. I’ll miss his humour, his singing voice, and the way he encouraged me to embrace life’s possibilities. “Ous tem r turn u brother,” he’d say, and I’d respond with a cheeky, “I’ll brother you into acceptance.” Onie was the kind of friend who was impossible to replace.
Though his time with us was far too short, Onie accomplished more in his 30 years than many do in a lifetime. His legacy is one of resilience, kindness, and unwavering determination. He touched lives in profound ways, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Onie, our ever-smiling, joyful, and handsome friend, your light will never fade. You will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Though we wish we had more time with you, we are grateful for the gift of your presence in our lives.

Forever young, Effion.
